Doctora en Sociología por la Universidad de Nueva York y Antropóloga, nacida en 1948 y madre de 3 hijos.

Actualmente profesora del Departamento de Sociología y Antropología en la Universidad de New York y distinguida como Miembro Honorario de CUNY en el 2006.

Presidenta de 1997-1998 de la Sociedad de Mujeres Sociólogas.

Honrada con los premios:

  • The Jesse Bernard Award of the American Sociological Association
  • The Mentoring Award of Sociologists for Women in Society
  • The Award for the Promotion of Human Welfare of the Southern Sociological Society
